What program do you use to make maps?
Affinity Designer, an affordable alternative to Adobe Illustrator with all the tools I need to create maps.
What programs do you recommend?
Illustrator is definitely the most capable graphic design app, but, with a $20/month price tag, to me, Illustrator isn't worth it. Affinity comes very close to Illustrator's capability, so I would recommend it if you can afford to pay $50. If you want a good free alternative to both these programs, I recommend Inkscape, it's pretty capable.
